Joseph Tidwell is an accomplished and entertaining creator of well-wrought stories, many of them carried into fictive realms from their origin in his early years in the Deep South. Joseph’s fiction and plays—often presented in a Southern vernacular—show deep insight into the times and culture of his “postage stamp of earth”.
His depictions of places, characters and events are presented with a full measure of sensitivity, direct-seeing and empathy. He depicts and explores that baseline question of how a person can seek and live a more fully-human life in a time and culture that can be cruel, violent, self-righteous and self-justified, and limited by traditions that have lingered from a darker past.
As Joseph relates his sometimes harrowing, sometimes humorous stories, he never fails to carry a light that fully illuminates the many-layered lives of his characters.
